Basal metabolic rate is the rate of energy expenditure by the body of a subject , who is awake and is lying in a state of maximum physical and mental rest under combortable conditions of temperature, pressure and humidity and 12 – 18 hours after the last meal .The above memtioned energy expenditure is necessary to maintain basic physiological function under standardize condition.

(i) It is expressed as heat produced in Cal/sq.m of body surface /hr.
(ii) In case of adult male, it is 40 Cal/sq.m of body surface area /hr.
(iii) In case of adult female, it 37 Cal/sq.m of body surface area /hr.
(iv) Clinically it is expressed as percentagel deviation of measured normal or standard value.
