The respiratory quotient (RQ) is the ratio in the steady state of the volume of carbon dioxide produced to the volume of O2 consumed per unit time.
The RQ of carbohydrate is 1.00 and RQ of fat is about 0.70. To determine the RQ of proteins in the body is a complex process. An average value of a RQ of protein is 0.82.
